To detect the effects of cryotherapy on inflammation and muscle performance after intense exercise, a group of 20 subjects performed two 40 min uphill runs. 10 subjects used a 20 min ice bath (5°C) for recovery whereas the other 10 subjects performed regular recovery. Before and after exercise knee extensor peak torque, soreness rating, thigh circumference were measured. Additionally chemokine ligand 2, a inflammatory zytokine was measured on blood plasma. There were no significant differences in all parameters before and after exercise, merely chemokine ligand 2 was with tendency lower.
