What does science tell us about increase in muscle mass?

An increase in muscle mass is the aim of many people, not only athletes but also recreationally active. This muscle hypertrophy is characterized by the increase of muscle cell volume, which can be achieved by proper training but also be supported by proper nutrition. The muscle cell contains of different compartments, whereas especially the contractile elements (myofibrillar hypertrophy) and the cytoplasm (sarcoplasmatic hypertrophy) can increase in volume. This article gives insight into the differences of both morphologic changes as well as its interference by nutrition.
